(TORONTO) – Kicking off its inaugural Canadian Tuner Challenge earlier this year, Scion announced a competition for tuners to submit their world-class designs for the ultimate customized 2011 Scion vehicle. Of the initial entries, three regional teams of Canadian tuners have now been selected to move on to the next phase of the contest. Over the next few months, the three teams will take their skills for creating stylish, performance-driven and unique vehicles to new heights, as they get to work modifying one 2011 Scion vehicle each.
The chosen teams have each received a new 2011 Scion to modify – either a tC, xB or xD - plus $10,000, and unlimited access to Scion-authorized accessories and the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) catalogue of accessories for their modifications. They have three months to build their cars. They’ll then show off their creations at Importfest – first in Toronto on August 27 and then in Montreal on October 1 - where the team with the best modified Scion vehicle, as chosen by a panel of judges, will be crowned champion.
The winning car will be sent in early November to the world’s premier specialty automotive products trade show – SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association show) in Las Vegas. The winning team will also take home $5,000.
The three finalist teams – selected by a panel of judges based on a number of criteria, including overall creativity and complexity of the build, originality and passion for tuning – are:
SR Auto Group (Richmond, B.C.) – Modifying exotic rides for more than a decade, this team of eight led by Tony Yuen will be customizing a Scion xB. Their design—titled Anarchy—features a minimalist approach with a military-inspired vibe. Outside, DL Style B-Magic Body Kit and Spoiler, team up with Modulare M23 19” Wheels and a host of custom touches, like hand painted Eccentric Blue Lug Nuts. Inside, a full black suede interior is set off by blue LED accent lighting, and features a 32” LED LCD TV. Performance modifications draw heavy on TRD, including a Big Brake Kit, Strut Tower Brace, Sway Bar, Exhaust System and Supercharger.
Camo Customs (Lachine, QC) – The tandem of Shawn O’Donnell and Benoit St-Cyr will be working with a Scion xD. Part of the tuner scene for a decade, they were inspired by the notion of “wild mild,” with the objective of creating a car with a big “wow” factor but still remaining a vehicle capable of day-to-day driving on city streets. Their mint green candy xD will feature a TRD Body Kit, Spoiler, Exhaust, and Air Intake, custom lighting inside and out, an in-dash multi-media centre backed up by a subwoofer with a custom box set-up.
Team TDS (Toronto, ON) – Led by Arthur Chiang, this team of seven will be customizing a Scion tC. Inspired by the theme of “chocolate love”, the Team TDS modification hallmarks of attention to detail, exquisitely presented engine bays, top quality parts, and a unique edgy style will be showcased in their dark brown and gold Scion tC build. Their modifications call for custom fabricated wheel arch over-fenders, rear diffuser, exhaust system with powder coated gold exhaust tip, trunk lid spoiler, turbo system, and floor mats. The entertainment system includes mobile video screens, head unit, speakers, amps and subwoofers.
“All three entries are unique and incredibly imaginative. We’re confident that whichever team emerges as the champion will stand out at SEMA this year, showing off their exceptional talent on a world stage,” said Larry Hutchinson, Director of Scion in Canada. “These finalists have demonstrated the true nature of Scion as an expression of style and performance on wheels. In fact, with 16 new Scion Authorized Accessories and TRD performance parts coming to Canada this spring, Scion owners everywhere can customize their own vehicles, too.”
Scion fans can follow the progress of the three teams over the coming months by visiting a newly launched website that is dedicated to the contest – www.tunerchallenge.ca. The site will have all kinds of behind-the-scenes photos and information so interested Canadians can track the builds in detail.
Visit www.tunerchallenge.ca to also enter for a chance to be Scion Canada’s guest at SEMA 2011. The lucky winner will receive a trip for two to Las Vegas, including exclusive access to invite-only Scion parties.
