TORONTO, ON - Three talented and imaginative teams from across Canada head into the second of 11 performance challenges this weekend, as the 2nd annual Scion Tuner Challenge continues. The teams – Swag Racing from Québec, Top Tuner from Ontario, and British Columbia’s VCMC – are going head to head in customized 2013 Scion FR-S sports cars.
“The Scion Tuner Challenge is a unique format that pushes each team – and their modified Scion FR-S – to the limit,” noted Larry Hutchinson, Senior Executive Director of Scion in Canada. “With its rear wheel drive powertrain, boxer engine and low centre of gravity, the FR-S is the ideal platform for performance tuning and we’re excited to see how these teams compete during this year-long contest.”
Challenge 1 results:
The first stage – an autocross challenge – was held August 26th as part of the ASN Canada National Autocross Championship at the Molson Centre in Barrie, Ontario.
- Team VCMC leader and driver Richard Basford is an experienced autocross racer and demonstrated why he was considered the top contender for this challenge, posting one of the fastest lap times of the day at 57:865 to capture the challenge and the $500 prize.
- Top Tuner driver Sasha Anis took second place with a 59-second lap.
- Swag Racing’s Dany Bernier – a drifter at heart – was far from home in a sea of orange cones: Dany traded some valuable seconds on some sideways action, which put Swag in third place but high on the entertainment scale.
Swag Racing takes home province advantage into the second event – a driving skills challenge to be held at the Autodrome St-Eustache in Montréal on Monday, September 3. Future challenges will take place between now and August, 2013.
Each team was provided with $15,000 and a stock 2013 FR-S – Scion’s lightweight, nimble and sleek sports car that delivers a pure driving experience. The winner of each challenge takes home $500, while points are awarded to each team based on their performance in each competition. The team with the most points at the end of the 11 challenges will be declared the champion, and will be awarded their FR-S as the winning prize.
